What is the Punishment Range for Misdemeanors Under Texas Law?

Under Texas Penal Code Section 12.04, misdemeanors are classified according to the relative seriousness of the offense into three categories:

  • Class C Misdemeanor, punishment includes a fine up to $500.

  • Class B Misdemeanor, punishment includes a fine up to $2,000 and/or a maximum jail sentence of 180 days.

  • Class A Misdemeanor, punishment includes a fine up to $4,000 and/or a maximum jail sentence of one year.
